Nail Strength: The Nutrients That Actually Matter

By The Gelagen Team · September 2026

Brittle, splitting nails affect up to 20% of the population. While topical treatments address the surface, nail strength is fundamentally determined by the keratin matrix that forms deep in the nail bed — and nutrition plays a direct role in that process.

Biotin: the most studied nutrient for nails

Multiple studies demonstrate that biotin supplementation at 2500–5000mcg daily can increase nail thickness by up to 25% and reduce splitting. Gelagen delivers 5000mcg, the higher end of the studied range.

Zinc: the structural mineral

Zinc deficiency causes Beau's lines (horizontal ridges) and weakened nail structure. At 2.7mg of zinc citrate, our formula provides 25% DV to support nail keratin integrity.

B-complex: the energy for growth

Nails grow approximately 3mm per month from the nail matrix. This rapid cell division depends on adequate B-vitamin supply for metabolic energy and DNA synthesis. Our formula includes B6, B12, folate and pantothenic acid.

Iron context

Iron deficiency is a common cause of spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia). Gelagen does not contain iron. If you suspect iron-related nail issues, a blood test is more appropriate than supplementation.

Setting expectations

Because nails grow slowly, improvements typically become visible after 2–3 months. Nail hardness may improve sooner than length. Take close-up photos of your nails at Day 1 for comparison.
