Brittle Nails: Common Nutritional Deficiencies to Consider

By The Gelagen Team · September 2026

Brittle nails (onychorrhexis) affect approximately 20% of the population. While causes range from chemical exposure to medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies are among the most correctable factors.

Biotin deficiency

The most well-documented nutritional cause of brittle nails. Multiple studies show that biotin supplementation at 2500–5000mcg improves nail thickness and reduces splitting. Gelagen provides 5000mcg.

Iron deficiency

Low iron causes spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia) and general brittleness. This is the most common nutritional deficiency globally but requires blood testing for diagnosis. Our formula does not contain iron — supplementing without testing can be harmful.

Zinc deficiency

Causes white spots, ridges and weakened nail structure. Our zinc citrate at 2.7mg (25% DV) provides supportive intake alongside dietary sources.

B-vitamin deficiency

Particularly B12 and folate deficiency can cause nail changes. Our formula covers both at over 100% DV in premium forms.

Protein deficiency

Nails are made of keratin, a protein. Insufficient dietary protein means insufficient raw material. No supplement compensates for inadequate protein intake — ensure your diet includes adequate protein sources.
